These dark dark days at Old Trafford. The Red Devils sit firmly at the bottom of the Premier League having lost both of their two games of the new season under manager Erik ten Hag causing speculation about the future of the club and players.

Manchester United started their campaign with a disappointing 2-1 loss at home to Brighton. A game in which the bookies clearly thought that they’d win given the number of betting offers available on the match. That defeat was followed up by a humiliating 4-0 thrashing at Old Trafford at the hands of Brentford which meant that Erik ten Hag became the the first manager to lose each of his first two league games in charge of the club since John Chapman in November 1921.

Although many fans and pundits are calling for owners, the Glazer family, to sell the club, the immediate issue is shaping the team so that they’re able to put points on the board. That’s led to a lot of speculation as to who Manchester United will sign, if anyone, before the transfer window closes on Thursday 1st September and we’ve put together a list of potential targets that the club has been linked with.

Frenkie de Jong

Barcelona midfielder Frenkie de Jong has long been linked with a move to Old Trafford in recent months but the Dutchman and his current club seem to be playing hardball. An agreement was previously reached between the two parties but with Chelsea emerging as a second interested club, a spanner has been thrown in the works. Couple that with Barcelona reportedly owing de Jong around £17m in past wages and refusing to pay up in full if he leaves and it’s clear why the transfer hasn’t been a smooth one.

It was reported on Monday that United’s offer of around £72m had been officially withdrawn but just a day later the Spanish press claimed that the deal is expected to go through following an ‘irrefutable’ offer that had been made.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang

Another player that United are battling it out with Chelsea for is former Arsenal captain Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.

With Cristiano Ronaldo clearly unhappy at Old Trafford, United are considering options for his replacement and as Aubameyang was a potential target back in January, it’s reported that they’re open to considering relaunching a bid for the striker.

Verdict: Possible

Adrien Rabiot

Juventus central midfielder Adrien Rabiot is in talks with Man Utd regarding a move to Old Trafford. The move for the France international is looking likely to go through before the window closes with an agreement reportedly reached between the clubs.

Rabiot also hinted at a departure from the Old Lady’s with a social media post from a fan that went viral in which the following was said: Supporter: "I am here with the great player Rabiot, of Juventus, now in England. So I wish you the best brother. Bye bye."
Rabiot: "Thank you. Bye."

Verdict: Likely

Ruben Neves

Ruben Neves has Premier League experience after spending the last five seasons with Wolves. The Portuguese midfielder hasn’t been a prominent transfer rumour for Manchester United but should the deal with Frenkie de Jong fall through, he could be a target.

Wolves recently confirmed the signing of midfielder Matheus Nunes for a fee of £42million from Sporting which could open the door for clubs such as Manchester United to make a move for Neves. With little competition for the player, it’s likely that United could tempt him to Old Trafford.

Verdict: Possible

Matheus Cunha

Manchester United are reportedly also interested in Brazilian forward Matheus Cunha who has been dubbed the ‘mini Meymar’. Cunha moved to Atlético Madrid from Bundesliga side Hertha in 2021 but hasn’t been a regular starter for the La Liga club.

Although he’s played as a centre-forward for Atlético, he’s a versatile player but whether or not United will want to take a chance on a young player with no Premier League experience is yet to be known given the desperate situation that they’re in as they really can’t afford to make anymore failed signings.
