As a brand, is the Premier League going to regret not having Bellingham playing for one of its teams?

Danil Krugovoy and Jude Bellingham 2020

Jude Bellingham is one of football’s biggest and fastest-rising stars, widely regarded as one of the best players in the world, despite being just 19 years old. The midfielder is lauded for his athleticism and tactical prowess, with composure and class on the ball highly unusual for a player of his age.

Given Bellingham’s ability and his star potential, it seems surprising that he doesn’t ply his trade in the sport’s biggest competition, the Premier League. Is the Premier League missing a trick by not having Bellingham among its ranks? Could the young Englishman return home or is he destined for different shores? Find out here.

Bellingham: An Overview

Bellingham began his career at Birmingham City but was soon snapped up by eagle- eyed scouts from German titans Borussia Dortmund, who immediately spotted the then- 17-year-old’s potential.

Bellingham soon became an integral, indispensable part of the Borussia Dortmund side. He has made 31 appearances for the club this season, scoring eight goals and recording five assists. However, these stats don’t tell the whole story. Bellingham is the centrepiece of the team, acting as the link between the defence and the offence and often is the side’s primary creative outlet.

Bellingham has been so impressive, in fact, that he was voted the Bundesliga Player of the Season, despite Borussia Dortmund missing out on the title after dropping points on the final day.

Liverpool Drop Out of the Race

Bellingham’s short career has, so far, been exemplary. It will come as no surprise to learn that a host of big teams have been desperate for the youngster’s signature, with Liverpool widely believed to be leading the race and the most likely to bring Bellingham home to the Premier League.

Liverpool’s midfield woes have been well-documented this season, with many expecting Bellingham to be the answer the Reds have been searching for. However, it would appear Liverpool’s interest in Bellingham has waned and, unless there is a major turnaround, he won’t be heading to Anfield for next season.

Could Real Madrid be Next?

Since Liverpool have all but dropped out of the race to sign Bellingham, there is only one club that people truly believe the Englishman is destined for - Real Madrid.

Real Madrid is packed full of stars and incredible footballing talent. Benzema and Vinicius Junior have dazzled, particularly in the Champions League. Do Real Madrid really need Bellingham given they already boast such an embarrassment of riches?

Modric, Real Madrid’s mercurial midfield magician, isn’t getting any younger. At the age of 37, he’s still one of the finest players in the world, but time catches up with us all, so Bellingham could well be brought in with a view to eventually replacing the Croatian.

Will the Premier League Regret Not Having Bellingham?

Football is a team sport, but it is increasingly defined by the game’s biggest players. Ronaldo, Messi, Neymar, Haaland; these players are the faces of the sport and are responsible for much of its commercial success.

As a brand, the Premier League might well regret missing out on Bellingham. However, he is still only 19, so he could well return to England after a spell in Madrid potentially with his best years ahead of him.
