Summer transfers and new season
With the new Premier League season set to start on 16th August, many people are looking at the player moves so far and how they will impact those teams that have been in the market. As well as player transfers, the Premier League also welcomes several new managers, Slot at Liverpool, Hürzeler at Brighton, Maresca at Chelsea and Lopetegui at West Ham. Some have already got some transfers rolling with Chelsea and West Ham both clearing players out of their squads, Brighton making several buys, but Arne Slot is yet to spend at Liverpool.
The transfer window closes at the end of August, so clubs only have a couple of weeks after their first game to get signings complete, or get players out who arent to feature this season. Lets have a look at some of the premier league clubs that have made some interesting transfer moves this summer
Aston Villa
Villa finished 4th last season, and with some competent dealings, could Unai Emery could do better? The Villans are currently priced around 50/1 with football betting sites (8th favourite). Finishing fourth also gives Villa a Champions League run this year, so Emery will be hoping to add depth to his squad.
Aston Villa have already made several signing so far, looking to bolster their numbers. £50 million on Amadou Onana, £37.5m on Ian Maatsen have been the two most expensive, but 10 million plus, has been spent on each of Jaden Philogene, Cameron Archer, Samuel Iling-Junior and Lewis Dobbin. All young players who could thrive under Unai Emery. It's not all been incomings however, much of these player signing have been funded by the sales of Moussa Diaby (£50m to Al-Ittihad) and Douglas Luiz (£42m to Juventus).
Manchester Utd
Erik ten Hag continues as manager at United, after it looked like the sack for him at the end of last season. Having agreed a one-year extension, he will need to improve on results next term after an underwhelming previous campaign. In what could be a new strategy in recruitment, United have signed Leny Yoro, regarded as one of the best young talents in football. United have got that signing done early at a realistic price, after previous years of excessive fees for players.
Joining Yoro, is Joshua Zirkzee, another young player who Ten Hag will hope to add to attacking options. Zirkee represented his country at the Euros and finished as Bologna’s top scorer as they qualified for the Champions League last season. A £36 million fee, again seems reasonable for Zirkzee and up front is an area Man Utd need to improve, after only scoring 58 goals last season.
Brighton
New manager Fabian Hurzeler has already made several signings for Brighton this summer. The promising winger, Yankuba Minteh has been signed for £33million from Newcastle. He impressed on loan at Feyenoord last season, where he scored 10 goals in 27 games. Brighton struggled for goals last season, although one reason was the injury to Kaoru Mitoma, reducing chances created.
Mats Wieffer (£25 million from Feyenoord) is the other big money signing for Brighton. He is primarily a defensive midfielder and having lost Alexis Mac Allister and Moises Caicedo last season, Wieffer will bolster Hurzeler's midfield. At the opposite end of mega money transfer is the free transfer, and Brighton have picked up Amario Cozier-Duberry on one from Arsenal. The England youth international turned down a new deal at Arsenal to move to the south coast. Cozier-Duberry attracted interest from several clubs, but Brighton's track record for developing young players appealed, along with more opportunities for first team action. Brighton could have an exciting player in Amario, with him previously being compared to Bukayo Saka.
West Ham
Julen Lopetegui is another manager with a new team this year, after taking over West Ham from David Moyes in May. West Ham have signed Max Kilman in a £40 million deal from Wolverhampton Wanderers and reunites with Lopetegui, following his spell at Molineux last season. Kilman joins Crysencio Summerville (£25 millions, from Leeds) and Luis Guilherme (£19.5 from Palmeiras) as summer signings so far at the London Stadium.
Summerville was last season's Championship player of the year, and will be a big loss to the Leeds squad. The 22 year old joins on a five year deal, and will bring plenty of pace and creativity to West Ham's wing. Luis Guilherme is also a winger, although predominantly on the right. However, like Summerville, the Brazilian talent can play multiple roles, giving Lopetegui plenty of attacking options.
